The opening verses of Gospel of Mark introduce the beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ. John the Baptist appears in the wilderness calling people to repentance and baptizing them as they prepare their hearts for the coming Messiah. His message is clear: someone far greater is coming, one whose authority and power will surpass his own. John explains that while he baptizes with water, the One coming after him will baptize with the Holy Spirit.
Jesus then comes from Nazareth to be baptized by John in the Jordan River. As Jesus comes up out of the water, the heavens open, the Spirit descends like a dove, and a voice from heaven declares, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” This moment reveals Jesus’ identity and marks the beginning of His public ministry.
Immediately afterward, the Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness where He is tempted by Satan for forty days. After this testing, Jesus begins preaching that the kingdom of God is near and calls people to repent and believe the good news.
These verses set the stage for everything that follows: the arrival of God’s kingdom through Jesus, the call to repentance, and the invitation for people to respond in faith.
