In Gospel of Mark 6, we see how a spirit of offense can blind people to what God is doing. When Jesus Christ returns to His hometown of Nazareth, many people hear Him teach in the synagogue and are initially amazed. However, instead of embracing the truth, they begin to question Him. They focus on His background, saying, “Isn’t this the carpenter?” Because they thought they already knew Him, they took offense at Him.
Their familiarity and pride kept them from recognizing who Jesus truly was. As a result, Mark records that Jesus could do only a few miracles there. It was not that His power was limited, but their hardened hearts prevented them from receiving what God wanted to do. Offense closed the door to faith.
Later in the chapter, we see another tragic result of hardened hearts in the story of John the Baptist and Herod Antipas. John had spoken truth about Herod’s sinful relationship with Herodias. Instead of humbly receiving correction, Herodias held onto offense and resentment. Eventually, through manipulation and pride, she arranged for John to be executed.
These stories reveal a powerful warning. Offense can grow into pride, bitterness, and resistance to God’s voice. When we allow offense to take root, we risk missing the work God is doing around us. Mark 6 reminds us that humility and faith keep our hearts open to God’s power and truth.
