In Gospel of Mark 2:1–17, the ministry of Jesus Christ reveals both His authority to forgive sins and His heart for people who feel overlooked or rejected. When Jesus returns to Capernaum, news spreads quickly that He is home, and a large crowd gathers to hear Him teach. The house becomes so full that no one can even get near the door.
Four men bring their paralyzed friend hoping Jesus will heal him, but the crowd blocks their way. Instead of giving up, they climb onto the roof, dig through it, and lower the man down in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus first says something unexpected: “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Some of the teachers of the law silently question this statement, believing only God can forgive sins. Knowing their thoughts, Jesus asks whether it is easier to say someone’s sins are forgiven or to tell a paralyzed man to rise and walk.
To demonstrate His authority, Jesus tells the man to get up, take his mat, and go home. Immediately, the man stands and walks out before everyone, leaving the crowd amazed and praising God.Later, Jesus calls Matthew the Apostle, also known as Levi, a tax collector, to follow Him. When Jesus later eats with tax collectors and sinners, religious leaders criticize Him. Jesus responds that He came not for the righteous, but to call sinners.
