In Gospel of Mark 3:20–35, Jesus Christ begins to face opposition not only from religious leaders but also from His own family. As Jesus continues teaching and healing, crowds gather so constantly that He and His disciples barely have time to eat. The intensity of His ministry draws attention from everywhere, and people struggle to understand what He is doing.
When Jesus’ family hears about the situation, they come to take hold of Him because they believe He is out of His mind. They likely feel concern, confusion, and perhaps embarrassment about the growing controversy surrounding Him. At the same time, teachers of the law arrive from Jerusalem and accuse Jesus of being empowered by evil, claiming that He casts out demons by the power of Beelzebul. Jesus responds by showing the foolishness of their accusation, explaining that a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. His power over evil spirits is evidence that God’s kingdom is at work.
As the scene continues, Jesus’ mother and brothers arrive and send word for Him to come outside. Looking at those seated around Him, Jesus makes a profound statement: whoever does the will of God is His true family. This does not reject His earthly family but expands the idea of belonging.
Mark shows that following Jesus may bring misunderstanding, even from those closest to us. Yet Jesus offers a new family—one united not by blood, but by faith and obedience to God.
