In Gospel of John chapter 5, a man lay beside the pool of Pool of Bethesda. For thirty-eight years he had been paralyzed, waiting for a moment of hope. The water would stir, and people believed healing could happen, but he never had anyone to help him into the pool in time. His life was defined by waiting, disappointment, and longing for something to change.
Then Jesus Christ walked into his story. Jesus did not wait for the water to move or for the man to struggle toward healing. Instead, He asked a simple question: “Do you want to be made well?” With a word, Jesus told him to rise, take up his mat, and walk. In an instant, the man who had spent decades without hope stood up and walked away healed.
That moment points us to the hope celebrated at Christmas. The birth of Jesus was God stepping into a world full of people waiting for healing, freedom, and restoration. Just like the paralyzed man, humanity could not fix itself. But God came near in the manger.
Christmas reminds us that hope is not found in circumstances suddenly changing; it is found in the presence of Jesus, who meets us where we are and gives new life.
